Ensuring workplace inclusivity and a culture of diversity is fundamental to employees’ wellbeing, and will also drive better decision-making and innovation within organisations. We highlight some of the initiatives intended to develop a greater understanding of the specific experiences – and needs – of LGBTQ+ employees within journalism.

Evening Standard : building inclusive cultures
ESL’s DEI work will be further supported through changes across all that the group does, from job descriptions to induction to reward to learning and development. “Respect at work” workshops are mandatory for all. ESI is working with Project 23 to deliver more awareness workshops. Network Groups for all our people, from diverse backgrounds and interests, will lead to ongoing change.

Financial Times
The FT aims to create an environment that makes LGBTQ+ colleagues feel empowered and free to be themselves at work. Proud FT is our employee network that brings together lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer individuals and their allies within the company.
The FT is pleased to be a partner of PinkNews Futures conferences.
The FT works with external platforms and networks, including myGwork, to promote opportunities to the LGBTQ+ community, and proactively source candidates from these backgrounds for job openings across the organisation.
In November 2020, the FT published a comprehensive Transgender Inclusion Policy, the first major media company in the UK to do so. The policy contains guidance for staff and managers on supporting colleagues at all stages of transition, and a new provision for medical leave to allow for gender affirmative surgery and recuperation. This leave can be used by all colleagues for similar medical leave requirements.
