DMG Media Stephen Lawrence Scholarship and GG2 Young Journalist of the Year, DMG Media Mail Metro Media Adland Commits Black Lives Matter charter and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Champions network

The Stephen Lawrence Scholarship Programme has taken on a number of trainees from ethnic minority backgrounds. The Mail sponsors the GG2 Young Journalist of the Year Award for aspiring ethnic minority journalists, in conjunction with the Asian Media & Marketing Group. Mail Metro Media, the advertising arm of DMG Media, has signed up to the Adland Commits Black Lives Matter charter; in 2021 Mail Metro Media launched an Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Champions network that drives conversation around inclusion.

Evening Standard: partnership with Creative Access

ESL is partnered with Creative Access to work to deliver a wider pool of people to recruit from diverse backgrounds and is looking to strengthen recruitment. The DEI work will be further supported through changes across all that the group does. “Respect at work” workshops are mandatory for all. ESL has also launched networking groups for all our people from diverse backgrounds and interests to effect sustainable change.

Financial Times

In 2020 the FT introduced the position of US labour and equality correspondent in New York as part of our commitment to expand coverage of diversity on a global scale. Taylor Nicole Rogers covers the financial, social and policy barriers limiting equal market participation in minority communities

In 2021 the FT kicked off an award-winning series of articles looking at race and the financial system.

The FT editorial sponsorship programme is aimed at improving progression for colleagues in editorial from ethnic backgrounds that are underrepresented in senior journalism roles by providing access to, and support from, FT editorial leaders.

The Maisie Hylton Fellowship is a keystone in the FT’s drive to diversify our newsroom. The paid annual fellowship is for aspiring production journalists from underrepresented groups to work at the FT for six months.

The FT is proud to be a partner of the National Association of Black Journalists in the US and in the UK with Black Young Professionals.

FT Embrace is the FT’s Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic employee-led network. FT Embrace works to inform and educate individuals about BAME experiences and raises cultural awareness through open discussions and events. The group is committed to creating and maintaining a supportive environment for all.

Guardian News & Media Race Action Plan and Race Steering Committee

GNM’s UK Race Action Plan commits to actions that encourage transparency, accountability and improve diversity across the business. The Guardian’s Race Steering Committee raises awareness of race equality across GNM, monitors performance in relation to its race action plan, and holds senior executives and managers to account for actions related to the race action plan.

News UK Sun Widening Media Diversity scholarship, News UK Cultural Diversity Network, Diversity and Inclusion Development Programme, Diversity Action Groups

The Sun’s Widening Media Diversity scholarship awards a Muslim student a bursary to study for an MA in journalism at City University. News UK has instigated a Cultural Diversity Network; a Diversity and Inclusion Development Programme works on building inclusive teams; Diversity Action Groups within brands across the business consult both on sensitive issues for minority communities and making teams more inclusive.
