The former Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, will speak at the Society of Editors’ ‘Crisis in Our Courts’ seminar in January.

The event – ‘Crisis in our Courts – and How to Solve it’ – will be staged at the offices of the Telegraph in central London on January 18 and will also hear from John Whittingdale MP and Society of Editors Executive Director Ian Murray.

Ian MacGregor, President of the Society of Editors and Editor Emeritus at the Telegraph, said: ''It is fantastic news that the former Lord Chief Justice Igor Judge is going to speak at the Courts seminar.

''He is one of the most respected voices in the justice system.

''This seminar is really important as our democracy is under threat from the declining number of courts being covered by the media''.

Igor Judge is a former English judge who served as the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the head of the judiciary, from 2008 to 2013.

Judge was called to the bar in 1963 and became a Recorder in 1976 and Queen's Counsel in 1979. From 1980 to 1986, he served on the Professional Conduct Committee of the Bar Council and in 1987, he was elected Leader of the Midland Circuit. In 1988 Judge was appointed a Justice of the High Court and assigned to the Queen's Bench Division. He was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in 1996 and was the Senior Presiding Judge from 1998 to 2003, when he became Deputy Chief Justice. He was appointed as the first President of the Queen's Bench Division in 2005 and prior to being appointed Lord Chief Justice, he was appointed Head of Criminal Justice in January 2007.

The seminar is being held to launch an initiative to explore ways in which coverage of courts in the UK can be dramatically improved and the event will be chaired by MacGregor.

The seminar is free and will start at 10.30am on January 18, to be concluded by midday with a buffet lunch for those wishing to remain for a networking session.

Admission will be through registration only and spaces are limited so early registration is encouraged. Those interested should contact Angela Upton at office@societyofeditors.org
