Entries are now open for the Society of Editors National Press Awards for 2017 – the ‘Oscars’ for UK Press at www.pressawards.org.uk. The Awards will celebrate the best of British national journalism during 2017.

With revised, new and returning categories, entries can be made for work published in print, website, online, mobile, video, audio or any other news delivery format in any UK national newspaper or any news website or platform covering UK national news during 2017.

Ian Murray, chair of the judges and Executive Director of the Society of Editors said: "The tremendous work carried out by dedicated, talented journalists in our industry has never been more important to recognise and the National Press Awards does just that.

"At a time when the debate rages publically over what constitutes real news, our profession needs to ensure those who strive to produce excellence in journalism are recognised and rewarded."

The awards this year will include Political Commentator of the Year recognising the commentator who politicians had to read during 2017. Judges will look for evidence of agenda-setting journalism from brilliantly connected writers with exceptional knowledge and commentary on the political scene.

Following feedback from entrants and judges, Science Journalist and Health Journalist of the Year will be recognised in two separate categories this year as well as Feature Writer of the Year which will recognise the most popular broadsheet writer and popular paper writer.  Categories that are being reintroduced include the Best of Humour Award, News Team of the Year and Sports Team of the Year. The awards will culminate with the coveted News Website of the Year Award and the Newspaper of the Year Award.

The London Hilton, Park Lane will provide the backdrop for the most prestigious event in the industry’s calendar with more than 400 editors, writers and columnists coming together to salute the quality, diversity and success of national journalism.

The closing date for entries is Friday 5 January 2018, allowing time for even the very last stories of the year to be included in submissions. A shortlist will be announced in February 2018.

Early entries are encouraged.

The Press Awards will culminate with a glittering gala dinner on Tuesday 13 March 2018. They are organised on behalf of the industry by the Society of Editors. Enquiries about table bookings can be made online now.

Proceeds will help fund the Society of Editors campaigning for press freedom and the Journalists’ Charity.

The awards are generously sponsored by Camelot which has supported the Society of Editors since 2001 alongside JTI, United Utilities, EY, Cision, PCS and the Press Association.  The awards are also supported by the Journalists' Charity and the British Journalism Review.

A list of categories  and full guidance can be found at www.pressawards.org.uk. Any queries should be directed to 01223 304080 or admin@pressawards.org.uk.
