PA MEDIA GROUP: How PA Media Group supports diversity via its apprenticeship scheme

PA Media runs journalism apprenticeships across its news and sport divisions, delivered by its sister company PA Training with a focus on increasing social and ethnic diversity in its editorial teams. Apprentices receive an NCTJ Diploma and placements in key editorial departments, with the aim of securing a full-time role in the newsroom.

For new entrants to the profession, such as school leavers or people looking for a career change, PA Media Group’s Journalist Apprenticeship offers full journalism training in the form of a 17-week NCTJ Diploma with PA Training followed by newsroom placements.

Apprentices learn core skills, including news reporting, interview techniques, developing stories, video, use of social media, and media law – working in rotation alongside journalists in PA’s newsrooms, including with reporters, and on the news, video, and social desks.

More broadly, across its entire portfolio of businesses PA Media Group works tirelessly to help make its newsrooms and content teams more reflective of the societies which they serve. Externally, this includes embedding itself within the local communities of London and Howden to mentor and inspire school leavers and disadvantaged students, while internally ensuring policies and initiatives are as diverse, inclusive, and equitable as possible.

‘Our previous apprentices have not only excelled in their careers but brought unique perspectives to our coverage which we look forward to continuing with new talent. I am delighted that we have been able to build on our previous scheme and hope that we can grow it even further with a range of partners.’
