Disabled people

Around 19% of working-age adults in the UK* live with a disability, yet disability inclusion can be overlooked in the workplace. We highlight media organisations that are looking to improve their disability inclusion efforts, from those working to understand and remove the barriers that discourage people with disabilities from applying for work to initiatives helping journalists with disabilities to progress up the career ladder.

BBC Extend in News Programme

The BBC Extend in News Programme improves disability representation and stories across BBC News & Current Affairs teams, integrating disabled journalists and production staff into BBC News teams, and giving them full support, reasonable adjustments, mentoring and development training.

Financial Times

The FT works with external organisations and charities, including Mencap, Neuropool, RNID and RNIB, to create supported internships, work experience projects and workshops.

In 2021 the FT began working with Ability Today, an online resource that provides news and services to the community. As an inaugural project, the Financial Times is hosting masterclasses on media law and freedom of information for differently abled and neurodiverse journalists.

The FT is proud to be a member of the Valuable 500, it is a Disability Confident Employer, and happy to confirm that all FT vacancies are advertised through Evenbreak.

FT Access is the FT’s employee network aiming to transform attitudes and provide a positive working environment for people with disabilities. FT Access offers events to raise awareness around subjects such as Neurodiversity, Caring for Carers, Disability Awareness Training working with organisations such as the National Autistic Society, Exceptional Individuals, and Disability Rights UK.

Telegraph Media Group Accessibility group

TMG supports its employee-led Accessibility group, which offers both support and promotion of a greater sense of inclusion and belonging at TMG. TMG was awarded Level 2 Disability Confident accreditation from the government in recognition of its efforts to recruit, retain and develop disabled people.
