The Society of Editors’ prestigious Media Freedom Awards are back next month with 23 categories celebrating excellence in public interest and campaigning journalism across the breadth of the UK news media industry.
With returning categories including Investigation of the Year, Podcast and Commentator of the Year, the awards are open to journalists and news organisations working across all platforms including national and regional print media, broadcast, digital and magazine journalism. New categories include The Ecotricity Impact Award for Environmental Journalism with excellence in environmental storytelling recognised across national and regional platforms.
Now in their fourth year, the awards will open on Monday 9 June 2025 with entries closing on 11 August 2025. The awards are sponsored by Allwyn, Vodafone and Ecotricity.
The success of the awards stems from their unique role in recognising excellence across the diverse breadth of the industry and this year’s event will once again see editors, news leaders and journalists come together for a high-profile ceremony at the iconic Globe Theatre in London on Wednesday 12 November 2025.
Announcing the 2025 launch of the prestigious awards, Sarah Whitehead, President of the Society of Editors and Director of Newsgathering and Operations at Sky News said: “The Media Freedom Awards, now in their fourth year, are unique in that they recognise excellence across all journalistic disciplines – from broadcast, to print, digital and magazine journalism.
“At a time when press freedom is under attack across the globe, the awards provide an opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary and brilliant journalism being produced across our diverse industry and we look forward to celebrating with you on 12 November.”
The Media Freedom Awards recognise UK individuals, teams and media organisations who have demonstrated determination, resilience and resolve in fulfilling their vital role in championing the public’s right to know.
