The Society of Editors has welcomed a pledge by the Culture Secretary to legislate to ensure public service media content is given more prominence on YouTube and other video sharing platforms.

Speaking at the Royal Television Society’s Cambridge Convention 2025 yesterday (Wednesday 17 September 2025), Lisa Nandy MP said that public service media was under threat and that in an increasingly competitive market, it was fighting to be seen and heard.

As video viewing moves away from broadcasters’ own services and towards third party platforms, Nandy said that the government supported OFCOM’s recommendation that Public Service Media content should be prominent on major video sharing platforms and that, if necessary, the government would legislate to ensure this took place.

Responding to the speech, Dawn Alford, Chief Executive of the Society of Editors welcomed the government’s recognition of the vital role that public service media plays as well as the need to set foundations for long-term media growth.

She said: “As recognised by the Culture Secretary, our public service media plays a vital role in providing high quality factual and trusted news and, in an increasingly competitive market, it fights to be seen and heard.

“Amid a plethora of fake news, conspiracy theories and disinformation available online, the vital necessity of accurate and factual news and information across all media cannot be under-estimated. We support the government’s recognition of the significant role that public service media plays and the need to set the foundations now to ensure its long-term sustainability and growth amid a changing media landscape.”
