National Press Awards Shortlist

Shortlists for the premier awards celebrating the best of UK national journalism were announced on 19 February 2019.

The National Press Awards for 2018, organised by the Society of Editors, recognise reporters and correspondents, commentators, columnists, cartoonists, designers, photographers, scoops, investigations and campaigns.  The awards culminate with the coveted News Website of the Year and Newspaper and Sunday Newspaper of the Year titles.

There are 39 categories including the Journalists’ Charity Award, the Cudlipp Award for campaign of the year and the Georgina Henry Prize for Innovation, in memory of the former deputy editor of The Guardian and founding member of Women in Journalism.

The event is the most prestigious in the industry’s calendar with around 500 editors and journalists coming together to salute the quality and success of national newspaper journalism in print and on digital platforms. Winners were announced at a glittering gala dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London on Tuesday 2 April 2019.

This year’s awards were presented by BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Emma Barnett.

The awards are organised on behalf of the industry by the Society of Editors. Proceeds help to fund the Society of Editors’ campaigns for media freedom and the Journalists’ Charity.

Sponsors for the awards include Camelot which has supported the Society of Editors since 2001, Google, Cision, Amazon Prime Video, EY, Wiggin, the Wellcome Trust, Penny Appeal, Press Association, Luther Pendragon, No 1 Lounges, Journalists’ Charity and the British Journalism Review.

The awards are also supported by the Cecil King Foundation which funds the Young Journalist of the Year to undertake a project up to the value of £5,000.

Ian Murray, chairman of the judges and Executive Director of the Society of Editors said: “Once again the British Press has proven that it is simply the best in the world by the sheer breadth and depth of the entries for these awards. The awards night itself, this year to be held on April 2, is rightly considered the time when the Press shows off its talent to the world.”
