Conference 2013

Society of Editors Conference 2013
Freedom to Inform
11-12 November 2013, London

The Society of Editors returned to London for the 2013 annual conference in November 2013 with a focus on the public’s right to know and the media’s freedom to inform.

The event, the major annual gathering of editors and senior figures from all sectors of the media always makes headlines and this year followed hard on the heels of a clampdown on the flow of information between public authorities and the media in the wake of Lord Justice Leveson’s report into the culture, practices and ethics of the press.

Alongside sessions on the police and the media, the future of regulation and how best to pay for this journalism, the theme of justice being seen to be done looked at new threats to the media such as secret justice, pre-charge anonymity, coroners, family courts, contempt, teachers’ anonymity and freedom of information.

Another star-studded line-up of contributors was planned for this year.

The conference was based at Tower Hotel with sessions taking place on Monday 11 November and throughout the morning of Tuesday 12 November at London & Partners. The extensive programme, incorporating the annual iconic Society of Editors Lecture and Gala Dinner (black tie), was set against the backdrop of the River Thames, the city’s most iconic landmark, Tower Bridge and stunning views of the historic St Katharine Docks.

Jonathan GrunSociety of Editors former president, Jonathan Grun, editor of the Press Association said: “This year’s conference follows a year in which countering threats to the media have been at the forefront of the society’s work.

“We will use this conference to make the case that an independent, robust press is truly a force for good and it will be a forum to debate the key issues with our critics.”
The conference ran from the morning of Monday November 11 at Tower Hotel with sessions on the morning of Tuesday November 12 at London & Partners.
