First speakers announced for SoE Future of News conference

Posted on: April 7, 2022 by Claire Meadows

The first set of speakers for next month’s Society of Editors conference have been announced today.

Daily Mirror Editor Alison Phillips, former BBC Editorial Director Kamal Ahmed, Guardian journalist Joseph Harker and Warren Nettleford, co-founder of the RTS award-winning youth platform Need to Know are the first names to be announced for next month’s high-profile media conference.

Considered a major highlight of the industry calendar, the in-person conference will take place on Wednesday 11 May 2022 at Mary Ward House in London.

Phillips, Editor of The Mirror since 2018, will lead a discussion on diversity and inclusion at the conference and whether initiatives to improve representation have worked and what’s next. The panel will also hear from Joseph Harker, Senior Editor, Diversity & Development at Guardian News & Media.

Kamal Ahmed, former Editorial Director of the BBC and Editor-in-Chief and co-founder of The News Movement will lead a panel of industry figures including Warren Nettleford to discuss how to engage young people and new audiences in news on social platforms. Nettleford is the co-founder of social-first news network Need to Know which first launched on Snapchat before it won the digital award at the RTS Television Journalism Awards. The network is being supported by the Google News Initiative to fund its second series on YouTube.

Dawn Alford, Executive Director of the Society of Editors said: “We are delighted that distinguished journalists such as Alison, Kamal, Joseph and Warren will be joining us on 11 May to discuss some of the important issues and exciting opportunities for the UK news media. More speakers will be announced in the coming days alongside a programme and we are looking forward to our industry colleagues joining us next month in London.”

The Society’s campaigning work on behalf of press freedom is made possible thanks to the support of Camelot, Meta and Google.
