A financial appeal organised by The Sun newspaper for NHS frontline staff has reached over £350,000 today (April 8).
The Sun launched its £1million appeal on Friday in order to provide help for NHS frontline staff during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The paper began the drive with its own donation of £50,000 as a starting figure.
The appeal is in partnership with NHS Charities Together which aims to get vital support to NHS staff, including food and care packages for workers and their families, as well as sleep pods and rest areas for staff to take a break in. The money raised will be split between 240 local hospital charities across the country.
The Sun’s Head of PR, Olivia Utley, told the SoE: “The Who Cares Wins Appeal aims to get vital support to staff in their hour of need. We’re aiming to raise a million pounds, and are absolutely delighted with the progress of the campaign so far: in five days, our selfless readers have already donated over £250,000. The Sun and its readers are proud to be helping Britain’s heroic NHS workers.”
The Who Cares Wins Appeal has been backed by model and businesswoman Caprice Bourret who has made a generous donation to the fund.
This coronavirus campaign follows The Sun’s annual Who Cares Wins Awards for NHS heroes – usually announced in October – which celebrate staff who go beyond the call of duty to care for patients.
