Gaza correspondent to join conference war reporting panel

The BBC’s Rushdi Abualouf, whose powerful reports from Gaza in the aftermath of the Israeli airstrikes were watched by millions globally, will join a panel discussion focused on war reporting at the Society of Editors upcoming 25th Anniversary Conference.

Taking place in London on 30 April, the conference will hear how Abualouf (pictured), a Gaza correspondent with the BBC for more than 20 years, left the territory with his wife and children on 20 November 2023 for the sake of their safety and is now based in Istanbul, Turkey.

Announcing his participation, Dawn Alford, Executive Director of the Society said: “As part of the programme for our 25th anniversary conference, we will be looking closely at the challenges and responsibilities for journalists and newsrooms of reporting from conflict zones and, amid the ongoing war in Israel and Gaza, we are honoured that the BBC’s Rushdi Abualouf has chosen to share his experiences with the Society of Editors.  

“We are expecting more than 200 leading editors and news executives at the high-profile event, and I have no doubt that all those in attendances will value this unique opportunity to hear from Rushdi.”

Taking place at the Leonardo Royal London Hotel in St Paul’s, the conference will also hear from the Lady Chief Justice the Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill; Jonathan Munro, Deputy CEO of BBC News and Director of Journalism for the Corporation;  Alex Crawford, Special Correspondent for Sky News, Christina Lamb, Chief Foreign Correspondent for The Sunday Times; Pippa Crerar, Political Editor at The Guardian; Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Channel 4 News presenter, BBC Analysis Editor Ros Atkins, Maria Breslin, Editor of the Liverpool Echo and Dylan Jones, Editor of the Evening Standard amongst others. As well as the challenges and responsibilities of reporting from the front line, other panel themes include the next steps for police and media relations, the future of journalism and AI and engaging new audiences in politics.
