Shortlist announced for the National Press Awards for 2019

Posted on: February 19, 2020 by Mariella Brown

** Please note due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the awards have been postponed to a date later in the year.**

Shortlists for the premier awards celebrating the best of UK national journalism have been announced.

Organised by the Society of Editors, the National Press Awards for 2019 will recognise reporters and correspondents, commentators, columnists, cartoonists, designers, podcasts, photographers, scoops, investigations and campaigns. The awards culminate with the coveted News Website of the Year, and Daily and Sunday Newspaper of the Year titles.

There are 42 categories including the Journalists’ Charity Award, the Cudlipp Award for campaign of the year and the Georgina Henry Prize for Innovation, in memory of the former deputy editor of The Guardian and founding member of Women in Journalism. A shortlist for the Georgina Henry Prize will be announced at a later date.

The event is the most prestigious in the industry’s calendar with around 500 editors and journalists coming together to commend the excellence and distinction of national newspaper journalism both in print and on digital platforms. Winners will be announced at a celebratory gala dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London.

The awards are organised on behalf of the industry by the Society of Editors. Proceeds help to fund campaigns by the Society of Editors for media freedom and the Journalists’ Charity.

Sponsors for the awards include Camelot which has supported the Society of Editors since 2001, Amazon, Wiggin, the Journalists’ Charity, PA Media, and the British Journalism Review.

Ian Murray, chairman of the judges and Executive Director of the Society of Editors said:

“Once again the journalism of the national media here in the UK has shown it is second to none in the world. The sheer depth and courage of much of the investigation and reporting of the nation’s life is breath-taking when seen in the entries for these awards.

“From record entries, the judges have had an incredibly difficult task in reaching those shortlisted here. The awards themselves will be a night to remember.”

A full list of shortlisted entries in the Press Awards appears below.
