Regional Press Awards shortlist for 2019 announced

Posted on: June 5, 2020 by admin

Shortlists for the Society of Editors’ Regional Press Awards for 2019 have been announced.

Celebrating the best of British regional and local newspaper journalism in 2019 for print and online, a full list of shortlisted entries appears below.

This year’s awards ceremony would have taken place in London today (June 5) but was cancelled due to the Covid-19 crisis. However, the Society was determined the prestigious awards should still go ahead.

SoE executive director, Ian Murray said, “The annual Regional Press Awards is THE occasion in the calendar when the regional and local press can shout about the excellence that runs through the industry. It is a great pity that the awards gala lunch had to be cancelled, but we were determined the hard work by so many talented journalists in the regional press should not go unrecognised.

“The judging process has taken a little longer this year due to the present circumstances, and we are extremely grateful to all of the judges who have given up their time to provide such valuable support along with our sponsors.

“Today’s shortlists reveal a huge wealth of talent in the regional press. We will be announcing the winners two weeks from today on Friday, June 19. Each week day until June 19 we will be spotlighting several of the category shortlists and introducing the nominees and their work in our bulletin (subscribe here).”

Categories this year include the Cathryn Nicoll Interviewer of the Year award in conjunction with the NMA. The award, which carries a £500 cash prize, is in memory of Cathryn Nicoll who held the position of news editor at the Croydon Advertiser during her career as a journalist.

The Society of Editors organises the awards on behalf of the industry. We are grateful to our regular sponsors who support the vital work that we do: Camelot, Facebook Journalism Project, Amazon Prime Video, Google News Initiative, Cision.
